A little too real for comfort.

Today's entry is one that really got under my skin. Its realistic nature makes it something of a beast. So once again I must warn you about one of these films.

Here is today's movie.

THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES.

Here is the link to the full film on YouTube.

OK, basically what you have here is a documentary style film with found footage pieced in. The background being that a serial killer's house was raided and eight-hundred VHS tapes were recovered that documented the killer's activities. From the abduction of victims to the torture, murder, and mutilation of the bodies. So it's pretty harrowing stuff.

The killer is dubbed, "the Water Street Butcher" and although you never see the killer's true identity, you hear his voice behind the camera and occasionally see him in disguise when he does appear on screen. He's cold, calculating, methodical, and extremely intelligent.

The film includes segments from forensic experts, FBI profilers, law enforcement, witnesses, and the families of the victims. But the actual footage from the tapes is the nightmare stuff here. Through the grainy distorted images from the old tapes you will see some scenes that will stay with you.

I think these images speak for themselves. Although this film is completely fictitious, it comes off very real. I think what really disturbed me while viewing the film was the knowledge that these types of crimes do take place and although the footage I was watching was fake, there has to be real stuff of a similar nature out there right now in the hands of the twisted psychopaths that this film portrays.

THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES was made in 2007 and the trailer got a wide release although the film itself got limited theatrical play. To this day, no DVD has been released, making this link here a good way to see it. It was directed by John Erick Dowdle who also directed Quarantine and Devil. His wife, Stacy Chbosky plays one of the killer's victims as well.

At times the acting seems a little forced but all in all I find this film to be highly unsettling and it is not an easy watch so take that into account. I suspect highly that this film will stay with you for a time.
